The maximum concentration (Cmax) and area under the trunk angular displacement, velocity, and acceleration curves (AUC0-Cmax) were calculated. Assessments of average, individual, and population bioequivalence were conducted after data were subjected to natural logarithmic transforms. Only the Cmax of the trunk angular acceleration of the HTD and TP was average bioequivalent (0.82-1.04). Both Cmax and AUC0-Cmax measures for all kinematic exposures between the TP and HTD were individual and population bioequivalent (95% upper-confidence bound < 0, linearized bioequivalence criteria). This indicates that the HTD is a suitable surrogate for a wheelchair user in low-speed, low-impact wheelchair studies.

The experience of senior stroke survivors: factors in community participation among wheelchair users

PURPOSE: This qualitative study investigated the lived experience of senior stroke survivors who used prescribed medicare power wheelchairs in their home and community. METHODS: The study involved semi-structured, in-depth interviews that were conducted with 10 participants, aged 70 to 80, who had used a power wheelchairs for a mean of 5.6 years. All participants used manual wheelchairs and two additionally used a power wheelchair and a scooter. RESULTS: A constant comparative inductive method of analysis of the data yielded several themes which are examined within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework of body functions and structure, activity limitations, participation, and contextual factors. Overall, the wheelchair, manual or power, was an enabler of community participation among the participants. However, the wheelchair’s use also created problems, such as limiting destinations and creating increased dependence on others. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: A balance scale model was proposed to facilitate an understanding of how the factors affecting community participation interact in this population. The brain-driven interface is described as a probabilistic relationship between neural activity and components of a prosthetic device that may take on discrete or continuous values. A new estimation procedure is developed for action potentials, and a corresponding procedure is described for field potentials and optical measurements. We test our framework against dominant approaches in an arm reaching task using simulated traces of ensemble spiking activity from primary motor cortex (MI) and a power wheelchairs navigation task using simulated traces of EEG-band power. Adaptive filtering is incorporated to demonstrate performance under neuron death and discovery. Finally, we characterize performance under model misspecification using physiologically realistic history dependence in MI spiking. These simulated results predict that the unified framework outperforms previous approaches under various conditions, in the control of position and velocity, based on trajectory and endpoint mean squared errors.

It also must be able to avoid any obstacles which are not normally part of the environment. An autonomous wheelchair will serve an important role by allowing users more freedom and independence. This design challenge is broken into four major steps: wheelchair control, environment recognition, route planning, and obstacle avoidance. The first step is to reverse engineer a wheelchair and rebuild the controls, which will be the main topic of discussion for this paper. Two big challenges with this step are high handicap scooters control and joystick control. An H-bridge motor interface, controlled by a microprocessor, was designed for the motors. The joystick control is handled with the same microprocessor.
